Because it's so fundamental to flooring, we pride ourselves on being underlay experts. We know everything there is to know about underlay and how to pick the best one for your home.
Investing in your underlay can increase the lifespan of your flooring by 30-50%! It's far from an optional extra - it can even save you money in the long run.
If you're getting new flooring, you usually need new underlay. Using underlay that's worn down can show wear more quickly, especially in high traffic areas, and over time wear the carpet down unevenly. It will harbour dirt and dust and should be replaced when installing new carpets.

Polyurethane Foam (PU) Underlay
PU foam Carpet Underlay has been so highly popular in recent years because they offer the ultimate in carpet underlay luxury and comfort with superb carpet wear protection and appearance retention.
PU is particularly good at insulation and impact sound reduction as well as being inherently comfortable and durable. This makes it a favoured material for carpet underlayment. It is also lightweight, so it's easy to carry and fit.
Sometimes overlooked and even dismissed as a pointless additional expense, underlay is actually an integral element that shapes how flooring feels, wears and looks. It's key to the finish of your floor and the longevity of your flooring. Getting the right underlay will ensure you get your money's worth!
Underlay:
• adds a cushioned depth of comfort underfoot
• acts like a shock absorber, protecting the condition of your floor
• acts as a barrier against noise and helps with soundproofing
• acts as an insulator and could save you money on your energy bills!
Underlay adds a level of cushioning underneath your carpet, luxury vinyl, laminate or wood flooring making it much more comfortable to walk on.
Most of the underlay sold used to be made from rubber. This has been overtaken by polyurethane, usually called "PU". It's made from offcuts or from foam that's been recycled. What's great about PU is that it comes in different thicknesses and densities to suit all floors and budgets. It's a great all-rounder.

FAQ
Should I buy the cheapest underlay?
Not necessarily. Each type of carpet underlay has various properties that suit different environments and needs. You should consider the room you are installing the carpet in, the floor you are laying the underlay onto, and the type of carpet on top before considering the price. Most carpet underlay is affordable, so the price is unlikely to inform your decision.
Does carpet underlay thickness matter?
Underlay thickness affects the feel of the carpet. A thick underlay, between 11 and 12mm, will give your carpet a cushioned, soft feel. However, a thinner underlay on the stairs may be easier to install. 9mm is ideal.
Should carpet and underlay be fitted by a professional?
A professional carpet fitter improves the results of your carpet installation. Their expertise will help your carpet and underlay last longer, and they can tackle tricky areas, such as the stairs.
Should I replace the carpet underlay when I install a new carpet?
Yes, you should replace your carpet underlay when fitting a new carpet. If you don't, the old underlay will already be worn and make your new carpet feel flat and uncomfortable.
